Black Russian Tomato is an excellent choice if you like a more flavoursome fruit. The unique blend of sugar and acid; and the distinctive, complex flavour makes this variety a must have in your garden. Cordon or indeterminate variety.

Medium-large (80-100g), dark mahogany-brown fruits. The colour of the skin darkens in hot weather. A well-known black tomato in many English garden. One of the best tasting black tomato. Usually a few weeks earlier than the red varieties if sown at the same time. When fully ripen you can experience a somewhat smoky and salty flavour. Suitable for outside production and growing in the greenhouse too.

Sow the black Russian tomato seeds about 1 cm deep into a seed tray or in small pots or cells, place the seeds at between 20-25 Celsius on a windowsill, heated greenhouse or propagator. Sow the seeds from early April till late May. If you sow the seeds later, then th ebest place is an unheated greenhouse, here the temperatures during the day will be very high and the seeds will germinate quickly. Also the best place is to grow tomatoes in the greenhouse. Learn more about growing tomatoes here.

As soon as seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out. Transplant the seedlings into individual small pots, later on they might need to be repotted if the plants are growing quickly and become too large for their post, the good indication of this is when you can see the roots going through the drainage hole of the pots. Make sure the leaves do not overlap. Temperatures during this stage should be 12-20 Celsius.

Plant outside from early June, when all risk of frost has passed, 80x60 cm apart, or keep in the greenhouse border or polytunnel.

Keep watering the Black Russian tomato plants in dry spells, especially when flowering and when the fruit is setting. Remove the side shoots of the tomato plants and stop them growing by pinching out the top growing point, when 4-6 trusses of fruits have set.
