Radicchio Palla Rossa, also know as red hearted leafy chicory, produce bright red leaves with white ribs. A popular leaf veg in mixed salads. As easy to grow as a lettuce. Can be grown to produce a full sized head in the autumn or picked early and used as a baby leaf vegetable. It has a unique bitter and spicy taste. In Italy the heads are grilled with olive oil or mixed into a risotto dish.
Sow the radicchio seeds from April to September for baby leaf production, 0.5-1 cm deep 30 cm apart. For full sized radicchio sow the seeds in May-June, the plants will crop well into the autumn. A rich, well-drained soil is recommended.Thin out to 25-35 cm apart as the seedlings appear. Water well in dry spells.
Can be harvested at the leafy stage, or left to mature until the hearts form. Thin out gradually and enjoy the fresh, crispy leaves in salads.
