Cara Maincrop Seed Potato - Blight Resistant

Cara is a late maincrop potato with superb disease resistance, ideal for the allotment. It produces heavy yields of smooth skinned tubers with shallow eyes and soft, moist white waxy flesh. It is great for roasting, baking and mash and has good resistance to both foliage and tuber blight. It also resists slug damage and rust and has excellent drought resistance. Its vigorous growth makes it a great variety for showing too!

Open pack upon arrival and lay the poatotes in a single layer on cardboard or paper in a cool, dark, well ventilated and dry place to prevent sweating and chitting.

The best time to plant potatoes is in March. It is important to 'Chit' the tubers prior to planting, by standing them 'rose-end up' in egg boxes or trays in a cool light place. This will allow them to sprout before planting and gives the crop a head start. It also helps them to take up the all-important nitrogen from the air, which will aid in healthy growth and disease resistance.

Potatoes are one of the most rewarding vegetables to grow. There is the enjoyment of the nurturing process, chitting, planting and earthing-up, not to mention the unbeatable taste of freshly harvested home grown produce. Potatoes are rich in dietary fibre, which promotes colon health and is thought to lower cholesterol levels, improve glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, reduce blood triglyceride concentrations, increase satiety and enhance weight loss.

Growing potatoes is easy and fun, even for novice gardeners. A good site with deep, fertile soil is essential, particularly one which drains well. The soil should be amended with plenty of organic matter in the autumn, and regular earthing up is helpful to protect the young plants from frost and to prevent them from becoming green in the light.
