Scorzonera Seeds Duplex is a heavy cropping improved variety with outstanding flavour and resistance to bolting. Scorzonera also called Black Salsify is very similar to salsify indeed. The plants are grown for their black skinned white roots, which are harvested in late autumn well into the winter as the plants are hardy.

Sow the Scorzonera seeds in the spring in April and May. Sow direct outside like other root vegetables, in shallow drills, 2 cm deep, leave 5 - 10 cm between plants and 30 - 40 cm between rows.

Thin out the seedkings if needed and keep watering the plants in longer dry spells. If they scorzonera plants dry out too much, the roots become woody.

Harvest the scorzonera in autumn - early winter. Be careful as the roots can easily snap.

Cook the scorzonera gently, after the black skin has been scraped off,  and serve as side dish with batter and a bit of garlic, or salsify can be mashed as well like other root vegetables. Delecious with steamed with lemon juice.
