Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is the ordinary garden mint native to Europe and southwest Asia. The plants grows up to 80 cm tall, the stems can be hairy; very vigorous groth. With its underground rhizomes mint can overtake your garden if you are not carefull. Ideally grow the plants in a medium sized pots. The flowers appear on slender spikes in the middle of the summer. Spearmint leaves can be used fresh, dried, or frozen. Used in cocktails and summer salads.

Also very popular to make mint sauce with to use it with lamb. The essential oil of the plant has been used as a flavoring for centuries.  Can be used as aseasoning to fish, meat and potato. Contains a great amount of Vitamin A and C, Magnesium, Iron, and Vitamin B6.

Sow the spear mint seeds from March onwards inside in small pots or trays. The mint seeds are very fine, the best is to cover the seeds with sieved compost and place the tray in a polythene bag at about 18 Celsius. Germination can take up to 20 days. Water the pots from the bottom, saucer required, this way the fine peppermint seeds will not be disturbed during the germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle pinch some out if too crowded.

After all risk of frost has passed, plant in groups into final position. The strong growing plants will produce plenty of tasty leaves. Cut them as required before flowering, ideal for drying.
