Leek Seeds

Our extremly popular leek seeds are available at a really competitive price. The leek, Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum (L.), also sometimes known as Allium porrum, is a vegetable which belongs, along with the onion and garlic, to the Alliaceae family. Two related vegetables, the elephant garlic and kurrat, are also variant subspecies of Allium ampeloprasum, although different in their uses as food. The edible part of the leek plant is a bundle of leaf sheaths which is sometimes called a stem or stalk.

Sow the leek seeds inside late winter if you want earlier crops, however it is most common to sow in early spring indoors or later on directly outside. Sow the seeds in a seed tray or in seed cells about 1cm deep into a good quality seed compost, it will help to separate the seedlings later when transplanting, without damaging the fine roots. Outdoor sowings can be done in a well prepared seedbed if you wish to transplant the plants or directly to their permanent position. If you sow the leek seeds directly it will save you from transplanting the fragile seedlings, which is preferred by many gardeners. Germination can takeup to 3 weeks. After the leek seedlings appear thin them out as necessary, leaving about 5cm between the plants. Later on, if sown in a permanent bed, thin the plants to 20-30 cm apart.
